Top Diploma in Engineering Courses 2021- Polytechnic Courses, Eligibility, Duration, Fees, Scope

A Diploma in Engineering or Polytechnic course is a 3-year technical course which anyone can take up as early after completing your 10th or even after 12th. The engineering diploma courses are considered best for those engineering aspirants who have missed the opportunity of getting admission in B.E. Or B. Tech. after 12th. Also, those students who don’t want to waste time can go for this course after 10th.

The 3 years are divided into 6 semesters so, students need to complete 2 semesters each year. The course provides a comprehensive overview (most of the basics) training program (Theory & Practical) about engineering.

Diploma in Engineering:

We can consider a diploma in engineering a short-term job-oriented occupational course that can be pursued by any interested individual. Most of these diplomas in engineering courses are offered by Polytechnic Institutions in India and abroad. The Diploma in Engineering is offered in different engineering branches.

List of Diploma in Engineering courses

You have options to choose from civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, textile, mining, computer science, etc., and several other branches of engineering. After completing the diploma course, you can either go for a job or can apply for a degree course according to your diploma branch.

What is Polytechnic?

What is PolytechnicPolytechnic is a diploma-level engineering program designed in a way to educate the student about the fundamentals of a particular engineering branch that the student aspires to make a career in it. It is more of a traditional technical course than a vocational course.

NOTE: The word POLYTECHNIC was originally derived from two Greek words “poly = many & techno = art, i.e., Polutekhnos” later it became Polytechnique in French, and in the 18th century, it became POLYTECHNIC which we commonly know today.

Is Polytechnic a vocational course?

No, polytechnic courses don’t come under vocational courses.

Because vocational courses are more of a non-academic type, that allows an individual to gain skills of a particular trade (technical/non-technical) mostly for the job purpose in a particular industry. Vocational courses are typically job-oriented compare to polytechnic courses. These are specially designed courses according to industry standards.

Polytechnic Course MeaningPolytechnic on the other hand is a diploma in engineering that you can say traditional academic type courses, where students expose to the fundamental of engineering (Theory and Practical).

A diploma in engineering course put slightly more emphasis on practical knowledge than theory. But, we can say that a polytechnic course seems like a vocational course behaviorally when we consider terms like providing practical knowledge, job-oriented, considerably short-term compare to the degree courses.

Can I do a degree after a diploma?

Yes, you can do a degree after completing a diploma. There is a process called “lateral entry” for the students who have completed their diploma course and wanted to pursue the degree course further, e.g., you can get direct admission in 2nd year B. Tech. after completing a 3-year diploma in engineering.

Salary Package:

The salary package after completing a diploma in engineering isn’t constant, it mostly depends on the company (government/private) you are working with.

  • You can start working as DET (Diploma Engineer Trainee) with a starting package of 1.5 lakhs to 2 lakhs per annum, it changes from company to company.
  • On average you can expect a salary package of around 2 to 3 lakhs per annum, after a diploma in engineering.
  • Acquiring more experience with added qualifications can get you a salary package of around 3 to 5 lakhs per annum.
